STELL Malcom Joseph        31 ans (RN ZAF) Royal Newealand Air Force
  • 2° Pilote - Mécanicien     : FO.  ROSS  William              23 ans (RC AF)  Royal Canadian Air Force
  • Navigateur                 : Sgt. BRIERS John William        36 ans (VR)     Volontaire Réserve
  • Navigateur- Bombardier     : F.Sgt. SCHOFIELD Eric           33 ans (VR)            "
  • Bombardier-Opérateur Radio : F.Sgt. REID John Mac Donald     20 ans (VR)            "
  • Mitrailleur                : Sgt. ROWLEY Joseph Peter        22 ans (VR)            "
  • Mitrailleur                : Sgt. BRACEGIRDLE Julian Charles 26 ans (VR)            "
  • Mitrailleur                : Sgt. TWELL Harry                32 ans
  • Mitrailleur                : Sgt. MORE  Thomas                ?

Here follows a Google-Translation of this article for our fellow-english readers (Sorry for the approximations) :

About a story about a plane crash ally August 27, 1944 in BENAMENIL sector, historians research permits progress towards a better understanding of this crash.

Recall that in 1997, under the title "Lost in Transit" we published an article in the Revue Populaire Lorraine (RPL No. 134, February 1997) about an aircraft fell in the South Lunévillois. Specifically on page 281-mark 11- we quoted allied aircraft dropped 27 August 1944 in the BENAMENIL sector.

In 2009 we published a book "The Resistance Fréménil" suggesting that an aircraft crash and rescue a crew member by Fréménil resistance group (see article).

In addition to this act of rescue, we made an echo "in memory of the Resistance fighters Fréménil" employing a legitimate need for a plate souvenir to mark the event. The completion of this plate souvenir was effective November 11, 2015 during the anniversary ceremony of November 11, 1918.

Always on our site, Saturday, June 20, 2015, we recalled the composition of the local Resistance group, the rescue of a crew member of the aircraft of 27 August 1944 (date previously mentioned), and evocation it makes the shadow of soldiers needed to be rescued from oblivion.

In the discrete world of researchers of this story falls aircraft of World War II, experts argue seriously. Subject to ever more specific information about this crash, we can give a picture of the tragedy. Long billed as a US Flying Fortress aircraft is actually an English aircraft of the RAF.

This is a kind AVRO LANCASTER MkI the No. 61 Squ. British Night Bombardier aircraft (Royal Air Force) four-engine.

His mission: Bombing of Rüsselsheim (Germany)

The takeoff 08/25/1944 at 20h32- Base LUDFORD MAGNA Lincolnhir UK (England)

No. plane: NN SR-705 Type O LANCASTER MkI

No. Squadron: No. 101 Squadron

The crew was composed of 9 members:

Board- Chief Pilot: FO. STEEL Malcom Joseph 31 (RN ZAF) Newealand Royal Air Force
Flying Officer - Pilot : FO. ROSS William 23 (RC AF) Royal Canadian Air Force
Flight Engineer : Sgt. BRIERS John William 36 (VR) Volunteer Reserve
Navigator - Air Bomber F.Sgt. Eric SCHOFIELD 33 (VR) "
Air Bomber - Radio Operator : F.Sgt. REID John MacDonald 20 (RV) "
Wireless Operator - Gunner Sgt. ROWLEY Peter Joseph 22 (VR) "
Air Gunner Sgt. BRACEGIRDLE Julian Charles 26 years (VR) "
Air Gunner Sgt. H.T WELL Harry 32
    Gunner Sgt. MORE Thomas

Note that the normal crew of a MkI LANCASTER consists of 7 members. So there were 2 more people for this mission.

If one refers to the story of Gaston CARMENTRE resistant which operated the rescue of a crew member, the LANCASTER returning from his mission of bombing Germany had flown OGEVILLER with an engine on fire. Continuing its low-altitude race above the forest MONDON, Sergeant Thomas MORE gunner would have the opportunity to parachute and landing abruptly on the edge of the wood in the municipality of BENAMENIL. The resistance group including Julien Malgras quickly made to rescue the airman wounded in the legs by hiding him home to Fréménil. Gaston CARMENTRE reminds us in his story (see "The resistance Fréménil '2009 page 21) episode of transporting injured hidden in a hay cart to BENAMENIL from Dr. SEGALL itself resistant, as well as return to Fréménil using the same ploy. We know that Sergeant Thomas MORE (registration number 978951) after healing could find freedom through the evacuation chain of Resistance.

What happened to the plane and 8 crew members remaining?

Presumably he has difficulty flying with its engine on fire in the uncertain hope of a return to its base.

We have not found the exact place of falling LANCASTER. Can we locate it in the South region NANCY or Toul? What is certain is that the 8 crew members died and now based at the British Cemetery CHOLOY-MENILLOT (54). Emphasize youth crew this LANCASTER who gave his life that we might live today PEACE. Do not forget them. also keep the memory of resistant Fréménil, effective actors of rescue Gunner Thomas MORE, which should not, too, fall into oblivion.

To supplement our research we realized the military cemetery of CHOLOY-MENILLOT (CD118-Foug Toul) in the British-New Zealand's necropolis where we found the graves of eight RAF airmen buried in this cemetery. They are united now in one line off [1D] reconstituting forever LANCASTER MkI the crew of the squadron 101 Squ. that crashed Aug. 26, 1944.

The youngest was 20, most aged 36 years ...

They gave their lives to liberate the country where we can live in PEACE. Do not forget them.

This leaves the following questions:

What is the exact location of the fall of LANCASTER 101 Squadron?
What happened to Sergeant Thomas MORE (registration number 978951) after his rescue by the resistant Fréménil group?

Regarding the crash of the RAF LANCASTER we launch an APPEAL to all South municipality of the department 54 which was the scene of the accident to report us the event. Maybe the eight deceased airmen were buried temporarily in local (municipal cemetery for example) before finally rest at the military cemetery of CHOLOY-MENILLOT which could be included in the municipal archives in 1944.

Hopefully more later thanks to our researchers in history.

For now, we have the progress of historical research on this episode of the Second World War:

    Michel AUBURTIN of FAMECK (57)
    Alain CARMENTRE of MANONVILLER (54)
    Jerome Leclerc of VEZELISE (54)
    René Loubette of BENAMENIL (54)
    Edouard Renière BRUSSELS (Belgium)

Also remember the names of members of the Resistance Fréménil group (Sector 416) have all disappeared today:

    Julien MALGRAS (1905-1995) Group responsible.
    Paulette BENOIT (1916-1971)
    René HENRY (1893-1975)
    Nicolas DENIS (1891-1958)
    Pierre ADAM (1921-1944)
    CARMENTRE André (1924-1984)
    CARMENTRE Gaston (1925-1998)
    Dr. Laurian I.SEGALL (1900-1991)

Do not forget these faithful shadow soldiers.
